2.2 Solving Two Step Equations: Equivalent Equations: equations that have the same solutions. Isolate: Get a variable with a coefficient of 1 alone on one side of the equation. Inverse Operations: Opposite operations that undo other operations.

GOAL:

REAL-WORLD: You are making a bulletin board to advertise the MAC concert. You plan to use half of a sheet of paper for each flyer. You need 5 sheet of paper for a title banner. If you have 18 sheets of paper, how many flyers can you make?
4
We can find the solution to two step equations by using inverse operations. We start to solve the equation by doing one inverse operation at a time.
5
SOLUTION: Let a = number of flyers you can make +5 flyer needed for the banner To solve this problem, we must create an equation and solve it: 18 total number of papers we have
6
SOLUTION: Inverse of addition Like terms addition Inverse of divide Multiplication
7
YOU TRY IT: Solve for the variable. Check. 2x – 3 = 5
8
Solve 2x – 3 = 5 Notice that we use the inverse of addition and then The inverse of multiplication to isolate the variable. + 3 + 3 2x = 8 Check: 2x - 3 = 5 2(4)- 3 = 5 8 - 3 = 5 5 = 5 ___ __ 2 2 x = 4 Solution:
9
Notice that we use the inverse of division and then The inverse of addition to isolate the variable. b+3 = - 5 b = -8 - 3 -3
10
YOU TRY IT: What is the solution to
