Infrastructure

170 Buildings suffered damage – the worst affected were:  The School of Music (Llewellyn Hall and Peter Karmel Buildings)

 School of Art

 Research School of Chemistry

 Computer Sciences & Information Technology & Research School of Information Sciences & Engineering CSIT RSISE

 Marketing & Communication (I Block)

 Glasshouses

 The initial damage was caused by hailstones blocking gutters, shattering windows/skylights and blocking stormwater drains.  The heavy rain that followed caused significant flooding in the roads and in buildings.

Immediate Impact  University closed for five days  Teaching and research disrupted  Pressure on Halls of Residence to deal with students who did not have classes

Longer Term Impacts  Llewellyn Hall (School of Music) closed for 12 months  Concerts and graduations relocated  Repairs of carpets, ceilings, etc have to be scheduled over 12 months, due to extent of work and to minimise impact on operation of areas (in many cases the work will need to be completed out of hours)

Problems Identified  In the immediate aftermath of the storm, critical staff had difficulty travelling to campus because flooded roads  Communicating with all staff and students after hours to advise of closure  Failures of gutter systems and skylights  Difficulty of keeping people out of “closed” buildings  Flood damage to books, paper (particularly those stacked on floors), IT equipment, stationary supplies, pianos

Positives Identified  Having long term contractors gave the University immediate call on technical resources with campus knowledge to manage return to business.  In house technical staff in all areas were teamed to address critical issues.  The “emergency” bonded staff and improved morale.  Emergency briefings to senior management staff on a daily basis was a successful communication tool.  Locating the Media Officer in the Facilities and Services Control Section ensured that media releases were up to date.
