Manifesto Key Points Fragmentation of the research efforts Separated market segments Paradigm shift (transversal cooperation over diverse market segments of many stakeholders) We differentiate between infrastructure software and application services... Open Source Policy is a valid strategy Federation of projects... how to converge on common solutions Long term vision – New languages, AAL Space as networked devices Short term vision – Reference architecture to standardize and integrate the resources available in AAL environment AAL Forum 2010 Odense 12

The problem for many companies is: – how to combine their business strategies with open source software, – how to control on the software evolution in order to save their competitive advantage. It is worth to remember that, historically, Open Source have positioned towards the platforms and the infrastructural/back-end side of the software spectrum [1] [1] Brian Behlendorf “Open Source as a Business Strategy” in Open Sources: Voices from the Open Source Revolution, O’Reilly Eds,1999 Convincing industries to collaborate by using an OS approach 13 AAL Forum 2010 Odense

3 rd Generation FLOSS organizations 1 st generation: loosely coupled enthusiasts communities – the GNU project 2 nd generation: strongly integrated communities of individuals – the Apache Software Foundation 3 rd generation: foundations composed of stakeholders from industry, users and communities – the Eclipse foundation, OW2 Definitions by François Letellier (OW2) 14 AAL Forum 2010 Odense

From 2.5 Generation Community AAL Forum 2010 Odense 15 2 nd Gen. Community 2,5 Gen. Community 3 rd Gen. Community 3,5 Gen. Community AALOA will start with a minimal support from SMEs AALOA objectives are beyond pure industrial interests

Association Principles 16 Technology neutral – It means that we search for the best solution – Independently of the interest of any technology provider Transparent – Regarding the technological solutions provided and promoted – Regarding the governance rules and strategic choices Open – No discrimination of person, group of persons, or companies – Clear process definition to join the association and to be nominated for the various elective offices Non profit – Just the interest to create market conditions – Costs covered mainly by donation / sponsorship AAL Forum 2010 Odense 16

Association (www.aaloa.org) Keep it Simple Federation of projects – Not only software projects (see proposed mission) » E.g. a thematic conference with its own scientific committee could be supported by the association as project Simple Management – Board of Directors (OS oriented) » The board mainly decides to accept the new initiatives (mission compliant) » No interference in the design choices of the various projects – Advisory Board (Industry oriented) » Provide a forum for communications among the industries and the research community » advise on technical & market problems » Organized in Working Groups 17 AAL Forum 2010 Odense

Association other considerations Involve – Individuals, other associations, companies Diversity – Do not force monoculture (do not filter ideas) – Many projects free to organize their governance rules – Common rules will emerge by practice – Association as common space to share ideas Easy adaptation to new needs – Bylaws amendable to convey new players – Bylaws amendable to manage a supersized association 18 AAL Forum 2010 Odense
