2 What is hair? Protein filament that grows from follicles found in the dermis. Defining feature of mammals. All natural hair colors are the result of two types of hair pigments.

3 Why do we have hair? Homo Habilis: 1.5 – 2.1 million years ago Early humans had fur. This was lost after moving from forest to open savanna. The one exception was head hair.

4 What is the purpose of hair? Thermoregulation. Protection against UV light. Did you know…the world record for the longest hair is 18 ft 5.54 inches.

5 Hair Types Straight hair  Found further from equator  Allows more UV light to pass to the scalp

7 Hair in forensics Hair can be used as physical evidence in a wide variety of crimes. The medulla is a collection of cells which appear as a canal running through the center of the cell.
