Booker T. Washington Believed that blacks should focus their energy on education and learning a skill so they could become employed and self-supporting Created Tuskegee Institute that was supposed to be a model for black self- improvement through education Invited to speak at the International Exposition in Atlanta Speech made blacks cry and whites cheer. How His Ideas Relate to ARITS : Bennie was involved in school Goes hand in hand with Booker T. Washington’s philosophy to become educated and self- supporting. BOOKER T. WASHINGTON

DuBois Provided a philosophical basis for the Harlem Renaissance Graduated high school valedictorian and enrolled in Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee Helped found the Niagara movement which became re-structured as the NAACP. Popular writer, scholar, and leading Afro-American intellectual of the time W.E.B. DUBOIS How His Ideas Relate to ARITS : Believed in the advancement of colored people Youngers bought the house; moving up in the world.
