Confidential and Proprietary Information 1 Rapiscan Systems Cargo and Vehicle Inspection AsTEC Collaboration: Security Screening Presented by: Ed Morton Technical Director

Confidential and Proprietary Information 2 Structure of the Talk Outline of the Security Screening Problem Why ASTeC? Technology Collaboration Conclusions

Confidential and Proprietary Information 3 Background to the problem IED’s, Baghdad, 2005 Printer Cartridge, 2010 Rucksac Bomb, 2005

Confidential and Proprietary Information 4 X-Ray small vehicle inspection

Confidential and Proprietary Information 5 X-Ray large vehicle inspection

Confidential and Proprietary Information 6 Background to the problem Small vehicles are scanned at 200 kV giving steel penetration less than 50mm Large vehicles are scanned at 6MV giving steel penetration more than 300mm Need for intermediate energy system (1MV) capable of more than 150mm steel penetration Use for empty container screening (there are many of these!) Use for scanning in locations where 6MV systems require too much space (there are many of these too!) Use for low dose large occupied vehicle scanning (e.g. buses) Seek to detect stowaways, suicide bombers, illegal trade, explosive devices, hidden narcotics, alcohol, currency No viable radiation source on the market to suit this application so Either get someone to design and manufacture a source Or do a bespoke design and manufacture in-house

Confidential and Proprietary Information 7 Why ASTeC? ASTeC contains a broad range of experts in fundamental science as well as applied engineering of accelerator sources ASTeC has a comprehensive range of facilities for design, build and test of accelerator sources ASTeC has a more goal oriented ethos than standard University departments ASTeC has a project based programme which is suited to industrial partnership ASTeC can assist in creating grant supported collaborative research and development programmes Rapiscan Systems takes the approach that academic collaboration is essential in understanding next generation technologies and should be actively supported along with appropriate financial support Collaboration with ASTeC is, for us, directly in line with current market drivers

Confidential and Proprietary Information 8 Compact Linac programme Electron Gun X-Ray Target RF Supply 1MeV~keV

Confidential and Proprietary Information 9 Compact Linac programme

Confidential and Proprietary Information 10 Compact Linac programme

Confidential and Proprietary Information 11 Conclusions ASTeC has created a viable 1MV linear accelerator design working in partnership with The Cockcroft Institute, University of Lancaster, Rapiscan Systems and others. Next steps include full characterisation of the system including accelerator science driven tests and X-ray beam quality tests Image quality testing Product driven design including packaging, radiation shielding etc Transition of the design to manufacturing
