3 Id, Ego, and Super-Ego ID: The id represents a constant in the personality as it is always present. The id is governed by the 'pleasure principle'. Raw emotion, instincts, sexual drive, hunger, primitive nature. EGO: the surface of the personality, the part you usually show the world Works to find a balance between primitive drives and reality while satisfying the id and super-ego. SUPEREGO: the component of personality composed of our internalized ideals that we have acquired from our parents and from society. works to suppress the urges of the id and tries to make the ego behave morally, rather than realistically.the id

6 The Persona The mask(s) you put on before you show yourself to the outside world. The way you want to be perceived Your public image.

7 For Jung, the Self is symbolized by the circle (especially when divided in four quadrants), the square, or the Mandala. The Self is the center of the total personality, which includes consciousness, the unconscious, and the ego.

8 What distinguishes Jungian psychology is the idea that there are two centers of the personality. The ego is the center of consciousness whereas the Self is the center of the total personality, which includes consciousness, the unconscious, and the ego

9 The Shadow An unconscious complex that contains repressed and suppressed aspects of the conscious self. Contains both constructive and destructive elements. The shadow is instinctive and irrational

10 Anima and Animus the anima is the feminine side of a man's personal unconsious. It can be identified as all the unconscious feminine psychological qualities that a man possesses. the animus is the masculine side of a woman's personal unconscious. It can be identified as all the unconscious masculine psychological qualities that a woman possesses.

12 The Collective Unconscious Dreams and myths are constellations of archetypal images. They are not free compositions by an artist who plans them for artistic or informational effects. Dreams and myths happen to human beings. The archetype speaks through us.
