Presentation on theme: "Aim-Why should we use renewable resources?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Aim-Why should we use renewable resources?

2 Define Non-Renewable Resources
Finite = limited

3 Cannot be replenished by natural processes.
Once we use them, they're gone FOREVER.

4 What are some examples of nonrenewable resources?
Fossil Fuels- from the remains of organisms that lived millions of years ago Coal Oil Natural gas

5 What will happen in the future if we keep on using our non-renewable resources?
We will run out of them

6 Define Renewable Resources
Replaceable Items that will keep coming back as long as we treat them properly.

7 When we cut down trees for paper, we can replant new trees & get more paper.

8 Examples of Renewable Resources:
Fresh water Trees Air Sun energy Bio fuel Hydroelectricity Solar energy Wave power Wind power

9 What will happen in the future if we use our renewable resources without replacing them?
If they are not replaced as fast as they are used we will run out of them.

10 How can over fishing occur?
Section 6-2 World Fish Catch World Fish Catch per Person Total Catch (million tons) Go to Section:

11 Humans are removing too many fish
Too few fish are remaining to reproduce and replenish the fish population

12 Name Alternative Energy Sources (not fossil fuels):
Hydroelectricity Wind power Solar energy Nuclear energy

13 Each has their own tradeoffs…
Tradeoffs are advantages and disadvantages

14 What is hydroelectricity?
Dammed water forms electricity Advantages: No air pollution No use of fossil fuels

15 Disturbs aquatic ecosystems
Disadvantages Disturbs aquatic ecosystems

16 Doesn’t use fossil fuels
What is wind power? Wind forms electricity Advantages: No pollution Doesn’t use fossil fuels

17 Disadvantages Wind not constant Many turbines needed

18 What is solar energy? Sun Advantages: No pollution Affordable

19 Disadvantages Nighttime Cloudy weather

20 Water vapor is the only emission. Low fuel costs
What is nuclear energy? Splitting of atoms Advantages: Water vapor is the only emission. Low fuel costs

21 Radioactive waste (thousands of years)
Disadvantages Radioactive waste (thousands of years) High maintenance costs

22

23 Energy conservation is vital!
We need to conserve energy

24 Examples: Turn off lights Carpooling
Use fan instead of air conditioner, etc…

25 How can we correct human impact on the environment?

26 Education Laws Nature preserves Reduce Reuse Recycle
