2 What they do and wear A Pediatrician is a nurse/doctor for little children who tries to make them feel and get better. A pediatrician is held responsible for caring for newborns up to the point that they reach adulthood. The dress attire they wear are: scrubs, masks, gloves, stethoscope, white lab coats, casual attire They work in hospitals

3 Training/Education Pediatricians graduate from medical school and then take special courses solely in pediatrics for three or more years. They also must take the MCAT, the medical college admission test. Good grades

4 Starting Salary The starting salary is $135,000

6 Job outlook and Growth Expectancy BLS projected a 22% growth in employment from 2008-2018, much faster than average for all occupations. As a pediatrician, your compensation will vary by industry, location and experience, but the BLS reported a median annual salary of $155,370 in May 2010.

7 Duties and responsibilities The duties and responsibilities of a pediatrician are to monitor a child's health. Children from the newborn stage through seventeen years of age seek pediatric doctoring. Pediatricians assure the total health care of children within that age period. (continued)

8 Treat children who have minor illnesses, acute and chronic health problems, and growth and development concerns. Conduct research to study anatomy and develop or test medications, treatments, or procedures to prevent, or control disease or injury. Direct and coordinate activities of nurses, students, assistants, specialists, therapists, and other medical staff. Operate on patients to remove, repair, or improve functioning of diseased or injured body parts and systems.

9 Collect, record, and maintain patient information, such as medical history, reports, and examination results. Examine children regularly to assess their growth and development. Examine patients or order, perform and interpret diagnostic tests to obtain information on medical condition and determine diagnosis. Explain procedures and discuss test results or prescribed treatments with patients and parents or guardians. Monitor patients' condition and progress and re-evaluate treatments as necessary.
