2 Opening the format axis dialog box Excel scales axes that plot numeric values to accommodate the smallest and largest values. This may not be what we want to show. 4 Changing the range of values for the axis - 1 Even though the scale of the axis fits the values in our data well, we will increase the maximum value on the axis from 100 to 200 to demonstrate how we re-scale the axis. 7 Changing the major unit on the axis We can also change the increments on the horizontal axis with the Format Axis dialog box. 9 Changing the major unit for the axis - 1 We will change the major unit from 100 to 50. This will create tick marks and grid lines at 50, 100, 150, and 200 on the horizontal axis. 11 The chart with smaller major units We changed the major unit from 100 to 50, creating tick marks and grid lines at 50, 100, 150, and 200 on the horizontal axis. This change had no effect on the bars in the chart, but does make it a little easier to accurately estimate the values in relationship to the grid line at 50.
