2 II.Chemical Equations A.Chemical Reaction: A rearranging of how atoms are grouped. B.Chemical Equation: A shorthand way of representing a reaction. Reactants on left  Products on right Example: Sodium reacts with chlorine to produce sodium chloride. Na + Cl 2  NaCl List all 7 diatomic elements

3 C.Law of Conservation of Matter: In a chemical reaction, atoms are neither created or destroyed. There must be the same number of each type of atom on the product side as on the reactant side of the arrow. Na + Cl 2  NaCl (what’s the problem here)

4 D.Balanced Chemical Equation: Shows the same number of each type of atom at the beginning of a reaction and at the end of a reaction. Use coefficients to balance a reaction. Never change the subscripts Coefficients always go before a compound never in the middle. If no coefficient is shown before a compound, it indicates one of that compound.
