How it all began…

The Native American Movement

The Great Migration

The First People In Mexico, Central and South America, you had the famous Incas and Aztec empires. These were very large civilizations that had government and strong militaries established.

In North America… …you had much smaller groups of Native Americans spread out over the continent. No government or organized military. Just separate tribes.

Over in Europe Europe was going through massive change! – Black Death – Great Famine – Renaissance – Reformation (When the Catholics and Protestants split)

They wanted to expand and explore Europeans wanted to find a route to Asia. – Gold, Riches – Freedom – More land! Finding the Americas was an accident!

Spain and the Aztecs Cortez landed in Mexico. Brought weapons and disease. Destroyed the Aztecs.

South America? The Spanish and Portuguese landed in South America and brought about the same result as in Mexico.

Where does Christopher come into play? Columbus was looking for Asia. He landed in Central America. He reported back to Europe. Made the journey 4 times. Showed Europe that the Atlantic could be traveled and they could expand.

After Columbus, many more came… Amerigo Vespucci (Italian) left very descriptive details of the land. A famous mapmaker in Germany liked his detail, so he named the land America when he drew his maps.

Race for North America… Vikings came first. But they didn’t tell anyone. England, Spain, and France were all rushing for control over North America. Shhhh!

Triangle Trade Once the Europeans began to settle the Americas, the triangle trade was established. This was the trade between Europe, the Americas, and Africa.

Slavery in America Slavery was around LONG before it was in North America. Slave trading began when Europe colonized Africa and began trading goods for people.

Continued… By the 1600’s slavery was firmly established in the Americas. The style of living in America depended on slavery.

The Middle Passage The voyage from Africa to America became known as the middle passage. Horrible conditions. Usually thousands of slaves crammed into a ship. Many would die before they even made it to their destination.

What does it all = Europeans settled ‘new’ land. Heavy competition over who got what. Introduced slavery in Americas to ensure ability to farm.
