1 BELLWORK Write 2-3 sentences explaining… Content Objectives – We will demonstrate analysis of a poem by examining the text to draw personal conclusions about our own lives. Language Objectives – We will write to critique and evaluate two arguments by using sentence frames. 1.how Khalil Gibran’s poem compares to the excerpt from Malcom X. 2.how the form of Malcom X’s excerpt is different. 3.how the message of Malcom X’s excerpt is different. Use these sentence stems to help! Gibran’s poem is _______ while Malcom X’s excerpt is ________. The form is different in Malcom X’s because _______________.

3 Where I’m From by Julia Martin Stanza 1 I am from a shared room, From bunk beds and bathroom fights I am from Sunday dinners with family. (Grandma cooked, it tasted delicious). I am from Catholic schools, the uniform dress whose itchy fabric I remember as I boarded the bus to school.

4 Stanza 2 I’m from nuns and rules, from no make-up or polish. I’m from the 8 th grade buddies and the silly traditions, from do what the teacher says or else. I’m from practicing speeches with a reading in church and kneeling and repeating without thought.

8 Bell Work “Since then—’tis centuries…” is a quote from Dickinson’s poem. Imitate the apostrophe rule she is using by creating 3 of your own sentences using a ‘ Content Objectives – We will demonstrate analysis of poems by outlining, simplifying, and examining the text to draw conclusions and construct written responses about those conclusions. Language Objectives – We will write to compare and contrast two poems by using a double bubble thinking map.

9 “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”** – Skim the poem (no pens, no talking) – Write most important vocabulary in key words box **Villanelle Imitation 1.Decide on a topic for your poem 2.Come up with a refrain (2 most important lines that are repeated) 1.In the poem we read they are: do not go gentle into that good night rage, rage against the dying of the light 3.Create a list of words that rhyme 4.Create 11 more lines to go into your frame work.

10 After creating a one line summary, respond to the questions. – Work with your group (number off 1-7) to answer the questions on a separate piece of paper. Create a double bubble thinking map! Frame of Reference = poems, prior knowledge… Guiding Question = What do the poems have in common and how are they different? – How do the speakers differ? How are they similar? – How would you describe the tone of each poem? How does the tone of each poem differ? Is the tone the same at certain parts of the poem? – What are the similarities and differences of the poems' rhyme schemes? – What effect does Thomas' use of the villanelle form have on the tone of "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" in contrast to Dickinson’s poem? – What are the similarities and differences between each poem's presentation of death? – How else would you compare and contrast these poems?

11 1.Work with your table partner to answer the questions on a separate piece of paper or on the back. 2.HOMEWORK: read and analyze “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night.” Record notes/thoughts next to the poem.
