Location The Thyroid is located in the neck, under your Adam’s Apple

What is it? Thyroid- A large ductless gland in the neck that secretes hormones regulating growth and development through metabolism.

Types of Hormones Produced T3- triidothyronine T4- thyroxine (Both are used to stimulate growth) TSH- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Feedback Hormone- TSH and TRH Antagonist Hormone- LHRH

How does it contribute to homeostasis? The Thyroid is essential for bioenergetics, increasing the rate of Oxygen consumption and cellular metabolism

Diseases related to the Thyroid Hypothyroidism- abnormally low activity of the thyroid gland, resulting in retardation of growth and mental development in children and adults. Congenital Hypothyroidism- (CH) is a condition of thyroid hormone deficiency present at birth. Approximately 1 in 4000 newborn infants has a severe deficiency of thyroid function, while even more have mild or partial degrees.

Treatment? Hypothyroidism is treated with thyroid hormone tablets that contain the exact chemical compound that your thyroid would usually produce on it’s own.
