2 Social Networking What is social networking- a way of connecting with friends and family through a website which posts personal information- Who can view this information- anyone Is there a safe way to use these networks- you decide

3 Why Be Concerned About Safety Information on the internet is never private Personal information like birthday, address, phone numbers, friends, credit cards and personal records can be viewed by hackers Social networking sites allow personal information to be distributed to millions You can be a victim of identity theft Your information can be misused or worse you can be a victim of a predator

4 What is a Predator? Somebody that plunders or destroys a person Ruthlessly aggressive person that is determined or persistent Somebody who is looking to do harm to your children

5 Why Is It Important To Monitor Your Children On the Internet? To protect their safety and well being To protect their financial future and yours To guard against bullying and harassment and sexual predators

23 Parents and Students Can Take Action All parents can access the Internet with the help of the Peer leaders tonight Copies of tonight’s agenda is listed in your handout for notes and website resources Peer leaders will be meeting with 7th and 8 th graders in their Physical Education class to discuss the safe use of the Internet Students are required to sign Internet contracts before they are given access to the Internet Posters and Essay Contest to encourage safe use of Internet- winners are featured on your pamphlet
