CHILDHOOD - In 1849, when Susan was six a deadly disease called cholera came to St. Louis, but luckily she did not get it because she moved. - When she was nine she spent one year at a school and was forced to learn grammar, reading, and French. - The great fire of 1849, destroyed Susan’s home and killed thousands of people.

FUN FACTS - Susan’s family owned Dred Scott as a slave. - Susan ran a school for 11 years without any pay. -In September 1873, Susan opened the first public school in Des Peres school. - Susan retired in 1884. -Susan is buried in Bellefontaine cemetery.

FAMOUS - Susan was famous for bringing kindergarten to Missouri. - She went to Germany and met Frederick Froebel who had a kindergarten class and she took notes there. - Susan started a kindergarten class in Missouri
