4 Korean War During WWII, Soviets and Americans entered Korea to disarm the Japanese  38 th parallel Soviets control North, Americans control South After WWII, Borders stayed  Both thought they had control over Korea 1950, Soviets arm North Korea and invade South Korea

5 Korean War- Phase 1

6 Korean War- Phase 2 Sept - Nov 1950 On 15 September, American General MacArthur led 300,000 UN troops, 260,000 which were Americans. In danger of being cut off, the NKPA had to retreat. The Americans drove them back and recaptured South Korea. On 7 October 1950 MacArthur invaded North Korea. He advanced as far as the Chinese border. He boasted that the Americans would be 'home by Christmas'.

7 Korean War- Phase 3 Nov 1950 - Feb 1951 Now the Chinese were alarmed. On 25 November, 200,000 Chinese troops attacked MacArthur. Then, on December 31, half a million more Chinese troops entered the war and attacked the Americans. They drove the Americans back. They recaptured North Korea, and advanced into South Korea.

8 Korean War- Phase 4 February – March 1951 The Americans landed more troops. MacArthur reached the 38th parallel in March 1951.

10 The Korean War General Matthew Ridgway replaces MacArthur  War dies down July 1953, peace negotiations signed  33,600 U.S. soldiers die in battle  2,800 more from disease Causes America to build up arms Focus on Asia, as well as Europe to contain communism  Signed defense agreements with many Asian countries  Including aid to French forces fighting in Vietnam
