Prous Science R&D Activities In silico prediction of biological properties for small molecules and macromolecule targets Video and speech archival and indexation technology Interactivity and streaming technologies E-learning

Activities during RSNA 2003 Internet2 – NLM Tutorial, featuring advanced applications from 4 Universities –Stanford University –University of Chicago –Johns Hopkins School of Medicine –University of Kentucky Image Interpretation Session I2 Multicast Image Interpretation Session I2 HD Multicast & Unicast Image Interpretation Session Internet1 Webcast

Image Interpretation Session Broadcast A series of difficult cases are presented to a panel of expert radiologists for diagnosis –Oldest session in RSNA (60 years) –More than 4,400 (physical) attendees Live and on-demand virtual availability International HD reception centers: –Japan (2) –Netherlands –Spain (3)

Why Internet2? High quality image and video representation are essential in Radiology Use of international high speed connectivity for educational purposes Radiologists are technology early adopters

Why HD? Only HD can accomodate radiology imaging needs: Typical X-Ray: 1280 x 1024 x 12 bit grayscale Highly compressed version of HD: Windows Media HD encoder, 5-8 Mbps –Easy setup –Is quality good enough? –Several international sites

A collaborative effort between Prous Science the International Center for Advanced Internet Research and Radiology Dpt. Northwestern Univ. in Chicago designed to provide: A collaborative effort between Prous Science the International Center for Advanced Internet Research and Radiology Dpt. Northwestern Univ. in Chicago designed to provide: –On-demand archived video content –Interactive virtual access to live conferences –Telesurgeries –Medical Multiconferences –Digital Multimedia Educational Archive

Examples Examples

Scientific Conference Digital Archive: n Seamlessly incorporating information from Scientific Conferences providing cross-linked data across any relevant media format: text, numerical, chemical substructure, audio, video or slides. n Provides search capabilities over all media formats. n Direct access to speficic segments of relevant information. n CME credits available.

Advanced features n Streaming video using Real, Windows Media and Mpg formats. n 4 different streaming qualities : modem (56K), DSL & Cable (260K), Internet2 (1500K) & HD (5-8M). n Multicast enabled. n All content is audio indexed with an advanced speech recognition engine.

Some feedback received by RSNA from its members “This is AWESOME. As good as being there…” “Just to prove I was watching!! (from my room -- so part of your audience was indeed in their underwear) And the audio was perfect! Well done! ” “You cannot imagine how useful this is for those of us who cannot attend…”

International HD reception Insignificant amount of packet loss Academic and professional radiologists were extremelly satisfied with the quality All participating sites want to repeat next year AND to add interactivity

Some statistics 4,400 live (physical) attendees, of which about 400 actually watched the HD version in overflow rooms 200 I2 multicast viewers 10 HD reception centersFROM 30 countries 197 Internet1 viewers On-demand: more than 6,300 individual viewers from 56 countries by the end of March 2004 (3,5 months)

Conclusions and future RSNA has expanded the reach of its educational activity, both in time and in reach Will repeat next year, possibly with interactivity between sites Increased number of national and international participating sites
