1. Surfrider Foundation The Surfrider Foundation is a nonprofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches through conservation, activism, research and education

2. SURFRIDER HISTORY AND MILESTONES 1984: founded by a group of surfers in Malibu, California who were concerned about local surfers getting sick from polluted runoff and the environmental threats posed by escalating coastal development. 1991: won the second largest Clean Water Act suit in United States history against two pulp mills in Humboldt County, California. As a result of this suit, one of these mills, the Louisiana Pacific mill, became the only mill in North America producing totally chlorine-free (TCF) paper. 1992: won the national Renew America Award from the National Awards Council for environmental Sustainability for our nationwide efforts to clean up our coasts. 1995: represented by Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, sued the City and County of Honolulu, Hawaii for over 13,000 Clean Water Act violations at Kailua Bay. The suit was settled out of court with the agreement that the City and County: form an advisory council to monitor the area; would research the use of ultraviolet cleansing of wastewater; and would upgrade the existing wastewater treatment plant. 1998: settled a lawsuit against the International Boundary and Water Commission, which stipulated that IBWC research the feasibility of using environmentally-sensitive ponding systems rather than chemical wastewater treatment for the Mexico-California border area. 2003: grown to over 37,000 members with 60 chapters across the United States and Puerto Rico with international affiliates in Europe, Australia, Japan and Brazil

3. SURFRIDER San Mateo County 1998:Blue Water Task Force collaboration with land owners and local government to clean San Vicente Creek which spills into the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve. 2002: Awarded $450,000 grant from the state regional water quality control board, with coauthor San Mateo County Environmental Health, to continue our collaborative work. 2002:First chapter in the nation to call for a total ban of PWC’s within the boundaries of the MBNMS. Following the lead of Environmental Action of West Marin County which led to a total ban within the GFNMS. 2003: Finalizing construction of our own water testing facility in collaboration with the Sewer Authority Midcoast. 2003: Issued a Joint Position Statement, with a coalition of environmental groups, on the use of PWC within the boundaries of the MBNMS.
