F. Lower Extremities 1. Composed of 60 bones 2. Femur- thigh bone is the longest, heaviest, and strongest bone in the body a. Articulates with the hipbone and the tibia b. Angles medially as approaches opposite thigh

c. Head of proximal end articulates with the acetabulum of the hip 1. Sits on a neck which is commonly fractured in the elderly d. Body has a vertical ridge called the linea aspera for muscle attachment e. Distal end has a lateral and medial condyle 1. The two form the condylar fossa

3. Patella- knee cap, is a small triangular bone located anterior to the knee joint a. Broad end is the base, point is the apex b. Posterior surface has two articular facets to increase leverage on the tendons of the quadriceps

4. Tibia- larger, medial bone that bears the body’s weight a. Shin bone b. Has lateral and medial condyles which connect to the femur 1. The inferior surface of the lateral condyle holds the fibula c. Distally the medial malleoulus articulates with the ankle

5. Fibula- considerably smaller lateral bone of the lower leg a. Head attaches to the tibia, lateral malleolus attached to the ankle 1. Forms bump o the lateral surface of the ankle b. Fracture of the lower fibula harming the articulation with the tibia is a Pott’s fracture
