Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database http://www.rssd.esa.int/Gaia/paramdb J. de Bruijne, U. Lammers, M. Perryman

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Purpose The Gaia parameter database is a controlled, up-to- date repository of all parameters relevant to Gaia. The database contains satellite design, mathematical, physical & astronomical constants and parameters. Goal: harmonise parameters used in work performed by industrial contractors, working groups, …. To be used by scientific, technical & industrial communities (GDAAS, GIBIS, GASS, your software).

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Features I Actively maintained at ESTEC Reflects the most up-to-date & accurate status of Gaia parameters in the widest sense (~1500 entries) High level of self-consistency Parameters ‘approved’ by Gaia Science Team and relevant Working Groups Service to Gaia community at large

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Example of Contents Astro CCD depletion thickness Rest-frame QSO spectrum Density of SiC at room temperature Number of serial windows in AF11 J2 of Sun Silver mirror coating transmission Focal length Spectro telescope Size on-board solid-state-mass-memory Ground-station availability requirement MBP PSF Light deflection at limb of Jupiter

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Features II Access requires login/password [gaiaparam/gaia$param] Access on-line (browser) or off-line (e.g., wget) Access: Search or Browse Choice of output formats: –HTML –XML –Fortran-77, -90 –ANSI-C –C++ –Java –CSV (ASCII; e.g., MS Excel) –LaTeX –PDF

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Parameter Names Hierarchical breakdown of Gaia Compose parameter name as :PATH:CLASS[ _KIND][ _DIRECTION][ _CASE] Path has up to 4 levels (L1, L2, L3, L4) PATH: :Spectro:RVS:S06:R02: CLASS: CCD KIND: PixelSize DIRECTION: AL CASE: SerialRegister

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Hierarchical Breakdown (Outdated) L1: L3: L2: L4:

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Data Types 1.Scalar data (“numbers”) Basic parameters Measured parameters Defining constants Nominal/design parameters Adopted parameters Derived parameters Calculated for each query (double precision) 2.Multi-dimensional data (“files”) FITS format Download file or display contents graphically

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: WWW Interface Hierarchical parameter classification

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Search How many CCDs are there in the AF field? –Choose: Level 1 = “Astro” –Choose: Level 2 = “AF” –Choose: Class = “CCD” –Choose: Kind = “Number” The latter two options serve to refine the query but are not mandatory.

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Search Results for Scalar Data Parameter name Long description Source of the value Expression: if it is a derived parameter Status: confirmed, TBC, TBD Basic or derived parameter

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Search Results for Multi-Dimensional Data Download the data in FITS format Plot the data for a quick view What is the QE for the Astro CCDs? Choose Level 1 = “Astro”, Class = “CCD”, Kind = “QE”

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Plot of Multi-Dimensional Data

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: WWW Interface

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Browse Expandable nodes provide access through parameter hierarchy Click on parameter name to access full info – data returned as for search

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Versions

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Versions “Live” gives the latest values of all parameters and is suitable for interactive use. For software applications, use a controlled release of the database (currently V1-0). New versions released infrequently (~ 2/3 per year).

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Documents Technical Users Manual [U. Lammers; Livelink Gaia-UL-001] A Proposal for a Gaia Parameter Database [J. de Bruijne, U. Lammers, M. Perryman; Livelink Gaia-JdB-007] On-line help buttons

Jos de Bruijne Relativity and Reference Frame Working Group Meeting ESTEC, 17-18 June 2004 Gaia Parameter Database: Feedback Your feedback on content and use is critical Proposals for new parameters are welcomed Questions about the database should be directed to: gaialib@rssd.esa.intgaialib@rssd.esa.int
