The most effective way to solve is to use prime factors. 18 = 2 x 3 x 3 24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 The Least Common Multiple of these includes all the prime factors of either number. LCM= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 72 In 72 days from today, both men will be back in New York at the same time.
