STAYING SAFE AND DRUG FREE IN THIS UNIT, YOU WILL PARTICIPATE IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS AND ACTIVITIES PERTAINING TO TOBACCO, ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUGS. SPECIFIC UNITS WILL INCLUDE: THE SHORT AND LONG TERM EFFECTS OF SUBSTANCE USE, THE EFFECTS ON THE BODY AND THE POSITIVE ALTERNATIVES TO DRUG USE.

ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS Enduring Understanding The use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs have negative effects on the body systems. Tobacco, alcohol and other drugs have serious short and long term effects. Tobacco, alcohol and other drugs affect healthy decision making. There are positive alternatives for being drug-free.

DRUG USE RISKS What is a drug? What is a Over the Counter Drug (OTC)? What are the risks ?

IT IS…… Drug- A substance other than food that changes the structure of the body or mind. Over the Counter Drug-Many drugs that prevent or cure illnesses or treat symptoms (Found on shelves of most pharmacy or drug stores)

DRUG MISUSE OR ABUSE Drug Misuse: may involve taking too much of a drug or taking a medication prescribed for someone else. Taking or using medicine in a way that is not intended. Drug Abuse: Intentionally using drugs in a way that is unhealthful or illegal

PHYSICAL RISKS Damage to the brain and nervous system Feelings of nausea or confusion Loss of ability to walk or talk Memory loss Seizure Coma Death Drug addiction

EMOTIONAL/SOCIAL RISKS Weakened ability to think and learn Low self-esteem Decrease ability to relate to others Personality changes Mood swings Losing touch with feelings Losing touch with family and friends
