Unit 1: Linear Equations This chapter will include some review from last year. Mostly, we will be solving equations – lots of equations! 1.2 Solving One and Two Step Equations
2
Solve Equations like -1 + n = 1 3 What is the correct answer? Write down this problem on your READY RECALL SHEET Be prepared to explain your answer if you are called on. Page 10 of your INB
3
Get into your 4-Square Groups Solve -1 + n = 1 3 tape Page 10-11 of your INB
4
What does the Variable (letter) Represent?
5
Solving Equations is like Balancing a Scale. Your Goal is to find the number for “x” that will keep the scale balanced. The Answer will be the SOLUTION
6
What Value for “X” will keep this scale balanced? Step 1: Isolate the variable (get the variable alone) Remember that you must do the same thing to both sides to keep it balanced Step 2: Find the Solution. x + 2 = 6 -2 X = 4
7
ONE STEP EQUATION How many steps do you think it will take to solve this equation?
8
INTERACTIVE NOTEBOOK TIME
9
The goal is to isolate the Variable (Get the letter alone). A.Circle the Term with the Variable C. Undo the coefficient of the Variable Term by undoing with multiplication/division.. B. Get the Variable Term alone by undoing with addition/subtraction -8 x = -5 + 5 x = 7 -4 x = -5 7 7 x = -28 x = 18 3232 3232
10
4. 3p = 18 3. 14 = m + 9 1. x + 2 = 10 6. 4 e = 8 3 5. n = 4 5 2. x – 8 = 12
11
TWO STEP EQUATION How many steps do you think it will take to solve this equation?
12
The goal is to isolate the Variable (Get the letter alone). A.Circle the Term with the Variable C. Undo the coefficient of the Variable Term by undoing with multiplication/division. B. Get the Variable Term alone by undoing with addition/subtraction +8 5x = 20 55 X = 4 -6 x 3 = -1033 X = -30
13
4. 3p - 6 = 18 3. 14 = 5m + 9 1. 4x + 2 = 10 6. 4 e - 2 = 2 3 5. n + 1 = 4 5 2. -8 + 10x = 12

LET’S TRY A PROBLEM IN CONTEXT Hmwk # 28 Last week Amy ran 31 miles more than Ryan. Amy ran 40 miles. How many miles did Ryan run? 1. What are you trying to find out? 3. Set up an equation and solve to find the answer A = R + 31 We know that A= 40 so… 2. What is your Variable? R How many miles Ryan ran. 40 = R + 31 -31 9 = R Ryan ran 9 miles
15
-1 + n = 1 3 Let’s go back to our “I can” statement and solve it with our new skills.
