General Information China boasts a total land area of 9.6 million square kilometers, across four time zones. It has one of the world's oldest and continuous civilizations, consisting of states and cultures dating back more than six millennia. In the Chinese writing system, the characters are morph syllabic, each usually corresponding to a spoken syllable with a basic meaning. However, although Chinese words may be formed by characters with basic meanings, a majority of words in Mandarin Chinese require two or more characters to write (thus are poly- syllabic) but have meaning that is distinct from the characters they are made from.
