The goal of this webquest is to explore different interventions to implement in the classroom to help struggling learners before Child Study Team assistance is recommended. Introduction The objectives of this webquest are: 1. To identify a student’s academic strengths and/or weaknesses. 2. To research various types of interventions to address a student’s weaknesses. 3. To identify the most effective intervention(s) to implement and design an intervention plan. 4. To design a data collection instrument to use to chart progress and determine if the intervention plan is successful. Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Interventions to Help Struggling Learners
3
Task As a team of three, you will be responsible for: – Reading the case study and identifying the academic strengths and weaknesses of the student, Nicole. – Researching various interventions to be implemented to address Nicole’s academic weaknesses using the provided websites. – Choosing two interventions to implement to address Nicole’s academic weaknesses. – Designing an intervention plan based on the two interventions your group chose. – Designing a data collection chart (using excel)to use to record Nicole’s progress during the intervention period.
4
Process First, become familiar with the student, Nicole. Her case study is included on the next slide. Second, working as a team, discuss Nicole’s academic strengths and weaknesses and identify the weaknesses that are negatively influencing her performance the most. Third, begin researching interventions that could be implemented to help Nicole using the following link: http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=017508126040103729611:-cv8bv8thr8http://www.google.com/cse/home?cx=017508126040103729611:-cv8bv8thr8. Choose two to implement. Lastly, design an intervention plan and data collection instrument to monitor Nicole’s progress during the implemented interventions. Help with descriptions of data collection etcetera can be found at the following link and an example of a progress monitoring chart is on the next slide: http://www.interventioncentral.org/index.php/blog/38- assessmentprogressmonitoring/233-tier-1-structuring-teacher-data-collection

Nicole Nicole is currently a sixth grade student attending the Cedar Creek Middle School. Teacher report reveals she is a cooperative and hard-working student with good participation who struggles in the classroom. She often needs to work with a partner to complete all of her assignments. Nicole is reported to be performing below grade level in the areas of reading, writing, and math. She is reported to have good phonics and decoding skills and a good sight word vocabulary, but cannot answer questions correctly about what she just read. In math, Nicole is reported to be able to do basic calculations and solve one-step problems, but struggles with word problems and answering open-ended questions. She often skips these types of problems completely. In writing, Nicole is reported to do well with essay mechanics and spelling. However, her writing lacks ideas and organization. GOOD LUCK !
7
Evaluation Each group will identify Nicole’s academic strengths and weaknesses, identify the weaknesses the group chose to address through intervention, and discuss the two interventions chosen. Additionally, the intervention plan and data collection instrument your group designed will be presented.

Conclusion I hope that everyone has had an opportunity to learn more about identifying student weaknesses, researching interventions to address student needs, and designing intervention plans and data collection instruments to monitor student progress. Please feel free to share any information you learned today with your colleagues. -Thank you.
