2.  Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (type 1) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease of the pancreas, resulting in a lack of insulin.  Beta cells are damaged by autoimmune inflammation, leading to an insufficiency of insulin.  The glucose level in blood increases and cells do not have enough energy for metabolism.

3.  It results in the destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.  The lack of insulin leads to increased blood and urine glucose!

5.  Insulin is used to replace the lost beta cells, but it does not actually treat Mellitus. It must be used life-long, several times a day before meals.  A proper diabetic diet is not sugar-free, but balanced with a controlled calorie intake and regular timing.

6.  For each 500 US residents with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, there is only one donor pancreas.  “Mellitus” is Latin for “honey” or “sweet,” a name added when physicians discovered that the urine from people with diabetes is sweet with glucose.  William Cullen (1710-1790), a professor of chemistry and medicine in Scotland, is responsible for adding the term “mellitus.”
