1
Classifying Matter
2
What is matter & the properties Matter is anything made of atoms and molecules; it is anything that has a mass.atoms Physical states: solid, liquid & gas Note; there are two other states: plasma (gas particles which are broken apart & charged) Bose-Einstein(condensations at very low temperatures )
3
An atom is a basic unit of matter that consists of a dense central nucleus surrounded by a cloud of negatively charged electronsmatternucleus A molecule usually consists of two or more atoms( the smallest unit of an element) combined in a ratio Diatomic N 2 Molecule
4
Matter can be broken into two groups. Substances: Substances: is any material that has a definite chemical composition. Moreover, a pure substance cannot be separated into other substances by any mechanical process like heating, cooling, sorting or filtering. Mixtures: Mixtures: a sample of matter that contains two or more pure substances.
5
Mixtures can be divided into two groups Homogeneous Homogeneous: is a mixture which is the same throughout Heterogeneous Heterogeneous: is a mixtures that contains substances that are not evenly mixed
6
Examples of mixtures Homogenous: brewed tea or coffee, soapy water, blood, maple syrup( uniformly distribution of components can not be filtered out or will not settle out upon standing) Heterogeneous :orange juice with pulp in it, water with ice cubes in it, chicken noodle soup, granite salad ( all have uneven distribution of components and can be separated by physical means)
7
Substances can be broken down into two groups Element: a are pure substances which contain only one type of matter Compound: One or more kind of bonded atoms
8
Examples of substances Elements: Oxygen, gold, chlorine gas(Cl 2 ) Compound: table salt, sugar, methane
9
Place on copy paper& draw an example inside each geometric figure. How can you make a flow diagram of all the terms?
