1 Friday, Oct 23, 2009  Learning Goal – To understand how to write an ionic formula and name an ionic compound  Questions on Formula Wkst 1 – Part III and IV  Review ionic naming and formulas  Go over lab and make changes  Homework

2 Naming Ionic Compounds  Binary Compound  Cation name stays the same and is written 1 st  Anion: drop ending and add –ide  Ex: MgI 2  Compound With Transition Metals  Cation name stays the same, add Roman Numerals for charge  Anion: drop ending and add –ide if polyatomic, use your ion sheet  Ex: Fe 2 O 3  Compound With Polyatomic Ion  Use your ion sheet and Prefixes and Suffixes  Ex: Al(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 2 = aluminum acetate Ni(NO 3 ) 2

3 Writing Formulas  Cation is always written 1 st  Positive and negative charges must equal zero  Use subscripts to balance out charges  Do NOT include charges in the formulas  -ide ending usually indicates a monatomic ion (regular element from periodic table)  Examples:  Barium chloride  Zinc sulfate  Iron (II) nitrate

4 Homework:  Ionic formula and naming quiz on Monday  5 names, you write formula of compound  5 formulas, you write name of compound  Finish Formula Wkst #1 for Monday  Moodle lab quiz – by Mon at 11:55pm  Finish Naming Compounds Lab  Read and take notes over Sec 6.5 and 16.1
