Naming Ionic Compounds Binary Compound Cation name stays the same and is written 1 st Anion: drop ending and add –ide Ex: MgI 2 Compound With Transition Metals Cation name stays the same, add Roman Numerals for charge Anion: drop ending and add –ide if polyatomic, use your ion sheet Ex: Fe 2 O 3 Compound With Polyatomic Ion Use your ion sheet and Prefixes and Suffixes Ex: Al(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 2 = aluminum acetate Ni(NO 3 ) 2

Writing Formulas Cation is always written 1 st Positive and negative charges must equal zero Use subscripts to balance out charges Do NOT include charges in the formulas -ide ending usually indicates a monatomic ion (regular element from periodic table) Examples: Barium chloride Zinc sulfate Iron (II) nitrate

Homework: Ionic formula and naming quiz on Monday 5 names, you write formula of compound 5 formulas, you write name of compound Finish Formula Wkst #1 for Monday Moodle lab quiz – by Mon at 11:55pm Finish Naming Compounds Lab Read and take notes over Sec 6.5 and 16.1
