6 School of Materials Some Key Progression Milestones PhD or MPhil leading to PhD 24 month: Second Year Report, including viva 9 month: meeting to recommend progression at end of Year 1 12 month: First Year Report, including viva If required, you can apply for submission pending: up to 12 months after year 3 Research MUST be completed by end of year 3 FINAL submission deadline: end of 48 month You must pass the viva to progress to the next year

8 School of Materials Communication E-mail All students are provided with an e-mail account. You must check your email for university communications. Noticeboards There are various noticeboards around the School dedicated to specific purposes. Check noticeboards regularly. Student Pigeonholes All postgraduate students are provided with pigeonholes for incoming mail. You should check your pigeonhole regularly for any messages. Staff Pigeonholes You can contact a member of staff by leaving a message in his/her pigeonhole.

9 School of Materials Safety School Safety Advisor, Mr Ivan Easden Every student working in the School must attend a safety talk given by the Safety Advisor You cannot enter laboratories unless you have attended the safety lecture

10 School of Materials You MUST also update your own electronic student record. Student Records The School keeps a file for each student. If your local or home address changes please inform the Postgraduate Administrator. Failure to do so means that you do not receive important communications from the university.

11 School of Materials You are expected to attend all timetabled lectures, laboratory classes and tutorials, etc. Attendance If any problems arise which affect your progress, (illness, family bereavement, etc.), inform your supervisor. You may apply for an interruption of studies. Poor attendance may lead to the exclusion of students from examinations and communication of this information to any funding source. If you cannot attend because of illness, doctor’s appointment, interview, etc, you must inform the appropriate School Administrative Office.

12 School of Materials Regulations Plagiarism Theft or expropriation of someone else’s work without proper acknowledgement, presenting the material as if it were one’s own. Plagiarism is a serious academic offence and the consequences are severe.

13 School of Materials Computers Clusters Materials Science Centre: E30A Corrosion and Protection Centre: E30 Textiles: C56, Sackville Street Building All computers are networked to libraries, e-mail and have a range of general purpose software. You can use the PC’s whenever they are free.

14 School of Materials General Facilities Network Printing Network printing facilities are available in the School’s computer clusters. 15 School of Materials General Facilities Car Parking You can apply for a parking permit. However, allocations are severely restricted. Telephones Available in most student workrooms and laboratories. Students wishing to make external calls connected with their work should use the telephones of their supervisors. Post Outgoing post associated with your work may be left in the outgoing mail in each building. Stamped personal post may also be left in the outgoing mail.

17 School of Materials Health Matters You need to register with a local general practice. You must provide a certificate of illness if you are absent for more than five days or are absent from an examination. Registering with a Doctor

18 School of Materials Occupational Health Service Inside the main entrance of The Mill First point of contact for medical emergency on campus Advice on any disease or health hazard in the workplace. Health Matters

19 School of Materials Student Health Centre Available to give advice on health issues particularly related to University life and work. Students’ Emergency Dental Service This provides a free emergency dental service to students (University Dental Hospital). Optometric Clinic The Vision Centre has an Optometric Clinic which is open to students during semester time. Eye tests are carried out by final year students under qualified supervision. 20 School of Materials Student Feedback School PGR Forum Consists of members of School academic/ administrative/ technical staff and representatives from each programme/ research group. Deals with improving organisation or other arrangements for students.
