Welcome to Physics P

Diagnostic Quiz and Information Sheet Please take 10 minutes to do the diagnostic quiz, without calculators Please fill out the information sheet

Welcome to Physics

Day 1, Thursday, 21 August, 2014 Introduction Our Goal

Purpose of Course To gain happiness by bringing our thought process into alignment with the way the universe works To gain happiness by meeting or exceeding societal expectations

Objective of Physics Course Understanding of the laws of Nature

What grade can I get?

Chemistry < C = 27 ≥ C = 30 < C = 19 ≥ C = 10 < C = 8 ≥ C = 20

Physics < C = 2 ≥ C = 42 < C = 1 ≥ C = 19 < C = 1 ≥ C = 23

Let’s predict what will happen when we drop a heavy object and a light object.

Assignments The purpose of assignments is to gain understanding. Assignments will take many forms, such as reading, writing, problems, and projects.

Evidence of Understanding Students will demonstrate mastery by solutions and predictions on tests.

This is a college preparation course

College culture is very different from high school culture. Every person has proven that they have high academic skills to be allowed in. Every person wants to be there, as evidenced by completing a long application process and paying big bucks to be there.

Students are on average about 10 years more mature (older) than high school students. There are no bells. There is no fighting on campus. Lectures are the main instructional format. Class silence during lectures is automatic.

Books are not issued. Each student buys them on their own (about $150 and up per class). Role is not taken. Seats are not assigned. Parents are not called. Students with low grades are expelled (one semester probation).

Tests are seen as learning opportunities. Most college students find that high school has not adequately prepared them for college. Universities say 25% of incoming freshmen are ready for college work.

Students are expected to do two hours of homework for every hour of class. So 15 units (hours of class per week) represents a 45 hour week.

Typical Day for Us The objective is for the each student, and the class as a whole to learn and function on their own.

What are the 3 rules of every workplace?

The 3 rules of every workplace 1. Show up 2. Get along 3. Do your job

Classroom behaviors Be present is being in your seat at the bell. Headgear is not allowed in class. No electronics are allowed on (or out) during class (except for dedicated calculators). Respect for yourself and others is the norm. You are dismissed by the teacher, not the bell.

Assignments To gain understanding Take many forms Do we know things without doing them? Are doctors trained by giving medical students a pile of books and testing them 4 years later? Are points the real goal of homework?

Evidence of Understanding What grade would you expect if you scored 25% on the multiple choice, and completed few if any calculations or predictions on a test? If you had handed in many pages of homework what grade would you expect?

Mr. Irish I have a clear teaching certification. I have subject competencies in physics and chemistry. I have taught science for 11 years.

Classroom Rules

Electronics* should be: Turned Off Kept Out Of Sight Or they will be confiscated * except for dedicated calculators

No Hats or Head Coverings in class

No Food in Class

Come to class On-Time and be In Your Seat when the bell rings.

No Bathroom passes during the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes.

You are dismissed by Mr. Irish, not the bell.

You will never be dismissed at the door. Mr. Irish will only dismiss the class when everybody is in their seats.

There are 3 rules to every job. Show up Get along Do your job
