MATHS AT WORK Helping Your Apprentice with Maths at Work Think about how, when and where you use maths every day Point out examples of ways in which maths is used when you introduce them to a work-related task Start with something they are familiar with before moving on to situations that may be new to them Encourage them to identify fresh examples themselves
6
MATHS AT WORK Encourage them to practise their skills in new situations Give them responsibility: this ensures that they develop skills in context Help them aspects of other employees’ roles that involve maths
7
MATHS AT WORK Useful Questions: What do you know about the problem? What are the key words or facts? Would it help if you drew a picture or a diagram? Try breaking the task down into steps before working through it Think of a similar problem that you have solved in a different situation How can you work out your own method of solving it? Does the answer look reasonable and/or make sense? How can you check that you have got the right answer?
