3 Search Engines What are they? – A program for the internet that searches the WEB for specific key words. Why Do We Need Them? – To get data and research from the World Wide Web of computers.

4 Popular Search Engines GOOGLE www.google.com Yahoo www.yahoo.com Alta Vista www.altavista.com Ask Jeeves www.ask.com AOL www.aol.com

5 Search Engine OR Website? A Search Engine is NOT really a website. It searches other websites for keywords and information. It gives you the LINKS or names of the websites it finds. A Website is collection of text, images, videos, and other digital data that is located on a web server. It DOES NOT search other websites.

6 Search Engines Components. – Spiders/Bots – Strings – Indexers

7 Spiders A Web crawler/Bots – It gives the names of the website and the pages to the search engine.

8 Strings/Indexers Strings are the text that you entered for searching. Better known as “KEY WORDS” The INDEXER orders the websites and/or pages after the SPIDER finds the information. 1 2 3

9 Boolean Values AND OR NOT ( -) “The Minus Sign” “ “ (Quotation Marks) Boolean Values are words that help you find the exact data you are looking for when using a Search Engine. They are “operators” that determine TRUE or FALSE answers.

10 Email Setup AND – Both words must be on the website. Example: Greenbay AND Football OR – Either word can be on the website. Example: Houston OR Oilers Minus Sign (-) – These words should not be on the website.

11 Vocabulary Review  Search Engine It searches other websites for your info, then it displays the links to them.
