2  Purpose: This lesson breaks down the characteristics of living and nonliving things. Students will use the characteristics to sort and classify things. The interactive quiz slides utilize technology to test understanding.  Subject: Science (Kindergarten)  Topic: Sorting and classifying living and nonliving things  Objectives: Students should be able to use criteria to classify objects as living or nonliving. Students will recognize living and nonliving classifications as a reasonable way to sort things. ◦ ODE Science Standards:  Life Sciences Characteristics and Structure of Life 1. Explore differences between living and non-living things (e.g., plant-rock).  Physical Sciences Nature of Matter 3. Describe and sort objects by one or more properties (e.g., size, color and shape).  Procedures: ◦ Before beginning the PowerPoint, ask students to give examples of nonliving things. ◦ For content slides 3-6, ask students to provide other examples than the ones depicted on the slide. ◦ Slide 7 is a review. Ask students to summarize the content and explain how they will know how to classify something. ◦ The quiz section begins on slide 8. Use the action buttons to click student answers and review material as necessary.  Evaluation: ◦ Before: Student examples and explanations during discussion before the PowerPoint will reveal student understanding at the beginning of the lesson. ◦ During: As students give examples the teacher can gauge whether the students understand each underlying principle. ◦ After: Quiz question answers will reveal how well the students understand the material.  Materials: ◦ This PowerPoint!
