2 Significant Reformers Fredrick Douglas An escaped slave who later purchased his own freedom Abolitionist, spoke out against slavery. Edited the North Star - an abolitionist newspaper Wrote an auto-biography that was very important in teaching people about how bad slavery was!

3 Significant Reformers… Elizabeth Cady Stanton Worked for women’s rights (vote) Organized: Seneca Falls Women’s Rights Convention w/ Lucretia Mott Opposed the 15 th Amendment (gave African American men vote after Civil War) because it excluded women. Heavily inspired by the Declaration of Independence!!!!

4 Significant Reformers Horace Mann Worked to reform public education Government should pay for public school for all children. Dorothea Dix Worked to help reform the prison system and help those with mental disabilities get fair treatment and care.

5 Significant Reformers… William Lloyd Garrison Abolitionist from the North Wrote The Liberator (abolitionist newspaper) Harriet Beecher Stowe Abolitionist Wrote ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ to show the world the cruelties of slavery.

6 Significant Reformers Sojourner Truth African American WOMAN who was born a slave. Wrote the poem “Ain’t I a Woman?” to explain how black women and white women were treated differently. Worked as an abolitionist to educate people against slavery
