7 Shanghai, also called “ Shen ” or “ Hu ” for short in Chinese, is the center of finance, trade and culture of China. Administratively speaking, Shanghai is one of the four municipalities (with Beijing, Tianjin and Chongqing), being directly under the Central Government.

8 Location Shanghai, is situated at 31 o 41' north latitude and 121 o 29' east longitude. Bordering on Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces on the west, Shanghai is washed by the East China Sea on the east and Hangzhou Bay on the south. North of the city, the Yangtze River pours into the East China Sea.

10 Climate With a subtropical monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall. These years, the average temperature is 17.1 ℃ each year. The city has a frost- free period lasting up to 280 days a year, and receives an average annual rainfall of 1,768 mm.

11 However, nearly 80% of the rain comes during the May- September flood season, which is divided into three rainy periods,the Spring Rains, the Plum Rains and the Autumn Rains.

13 Area The city covers an area of 6,340.5 square kilometers, 0.06% of China's total territory, which extends about 120 kilometers in north and south and nearly 100 kilometers in east and west. Shanghai has an land area of 6,219 square kilometers and water area of 122 square kilometers.

15 In 1986, the government adopted the white magnolia as the city flower. The white magnolia has large, white petals and its eye always looks towards the sky. The flower symbolizes the pioneering and enterprising spirit of the city.
