Stakeholders and players in the JWST Calibration activity The astronomical community will receive fully calibrated JWST data STScI is responsible for delivering the data processing pipeline The SI teams are responsible for delivering the data processing algorithm and calibration files (… and the instruments) The STScI and SI teams work together to provide requirements The STScI developers implement the requirements

How do we get there?

OP-09: JWST INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION PLAN
6
The Instrument Calibration Plan provides details on instrument calibrations required for 1) pre-launch ground based observations, as well as 2) describing the procedures for maintaining calibration parameters and algorithms for the mission. It deals with OTE calibration, which should be delivered as an addendum after commissioning. It includes an exhaustive list of all modes/capabilities that will be supported/calibrated and to what accuracy. Any modes/capabilities that will not be supported will be listed with justifications. This document is part of the review package for: RV-06: JWST Operational Readiness Review (ORR) (draft version of OP-09) This document is not required until the Operation Readiness review, which occurs 12 months prior to launch.

OP-09: JWST INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION PLAN Contents 1) Introduction - Define the purpose and scope of this instrument calibration plan - Outline of the document 2) Instrument calibration plan - Details on which instrument modes and capabilities will be calibrated, to what accuracy, and other related information - Details on what instrument modes and capabilities will not be calibrated/supported and the justification for that decision - Details on pre-launch instrument calibration procedures - Details on procedures for maintaining instrument calibration parameters - Details on procedures for maintaining instrument calibration algorithms 3) OTE calibration plan (addendum following commissioning) - Details on OTE calibration procedures 4) Other information as agreed between the contractor and the COTR

JWST SI Team Deliverables OPS-09: Science Instrument Calibration Plan This is the input to the STScI document OP-09: Instrument Calibration Plan. It covers plans for calibration during instrument I&T as well as the commissioning phase. All required observing proposals will be developed by the SI teams GSW-01: Science Instrument Software Report The calibration algorithms and I&T S/W code documented and delivered here will serve as the basis for the STScI calibration pipeline software and data analysis software GSW-02: Calibration Reference Files Calibration files and formats to be used by the STScI calibration pipeline and data analysis S/W are documented here.

Rationale To establish a common ground for calibration needs. There are a large number of issues that benefit from cross- instrumental cooperation: - optimize/cross check ground or in-flight test plans - eliminate inconsistencies in science calibration (including photometric and astrometric absolute standards, models, etc.) - homogenize pipeline calibration (e.g. file format and organization, data processing, etc). To envision common solutions, leading to a “master plan” for JWST calibration To implement a successful JWST calibration strategy. SI teams and STScI collaborate to the development of the calibration subsystems - Algorithm definition - Test/acceptance - Planning/monitoring, etc.
