MUSIC MUSIC: Music is the art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds in a harmonious or expressive way. Music is a form of language or communication and is commonly called “the language of the emotions.” Music can be classified as universal and spiritual language

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS USED IN BIBLE TIMES CORNET: A hollow curved horn (from animal skin, metal) [Psalm 98:6; Dan 3:5, 7, 10, 15] CYMBALS: Two round plates of brass (copper or bronze) [2 Sam 6:5; Ps 150:5; 1 Cor 13:1] TIMBREL: A wooden hoop with skins pulled across the frame (Ex Tambourine, drums) [Ex 15:20; Judg 11:34; Ps 68:25, 81:12, 150:4; 1 Chron 13:8] DULCIMER: A box with strings stretched across, played with small hammers (sound echoes or vibrates) [Dan 3:5, 10, 15]

FLUTE: A straight pipe with holes [Judges 5:16; Dan 3:5] HARP: A wooden frame with 10 strings [Gen 4:21; 1 Sam 16:16] LYRE: A rectangular frame with 5 or more strings stretched across it (strings – small sheep intestines) [1 Sam 16:23] ORGAN: Simple instrument made of wood, ivory or bone [Gen 4:21; Job 21:12; Psalm 150:4] PSALTERY: A bottle-shaped stringed instrument (harp) [1 Sam 10:5; 2 Chron 5:12; Psalm 71:22]

SACKBUT: A portable harp-like instrument, tied to the players waist & held upright as he played [Dan 3:5, 7, 10, 15] TRUMPET: Horn-like instrument (horn of ram, goat, metal) [Num 10:2; Judg 7:16, Matt 24:31; 1 Cor 15:52; 1 Thess 4:16; Rev 8:2]

STRINGED INSTRUMENTS - Used for sacred as well as secular purposes - Especially popular in Hebrew worship - Sometimes up to 9 or more stringed instruments were used in one public worship (Psaltery was used a lot in the temple orchestra) OLD TESTAMENT USE OF INSTRUMENTS

WIND INSTRUMENTS - Used for occasions of rejoicing, festivals, marching, dance accompaniment, mourning for the dead - Horn used to signal warfare, special festive days and sacrifices

OLD TESTAMENT USE OF INSTRUMENTS PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS - Used in accompaniment with other instruments in worship or any occasion - Cymbals were normally the percussion instruments assigned to the temple

OLD TESTAMENT USE OF INSTRUMENTS Music in the sanctuary David formed an orchestrated choir – 1 Chron 15:16; 16:4-5 Music was a form of ministry & service in the sanctuary – 1 Chron 15:19; 25:26; 2 Chron 5:12-14; 2 Chron 7:6 Music worship continued after returning from captivity – Ezra 3:10-11

NEW TESTAMENT USE OF MUSIC - During the death of someone [Matt 9:23] - At the last supper [Matt 26:30; Mark 14:26] - During tribulations – Paul & Silas sang [Acts 16:25] - Christ's return- trumpet will sound [1 Thess 4:16; 1 Cor 15:52] - Heaven is overflowing with music and worship [Rev 5:9; 14:2-3; 15:3]

THE EFFECTS OF MUSIC PHYSICAL PHYSICAL: Our body responds to music naturally - Music can revive and refresh a person (Saul: 1 Sam 16:23) MENTAL MENTAL: Music appeals to our emotions/ affects the mind - Music has the power to influence ones entire consciousness (Saul was depressed but felt relief after hearing music) SPIRITUAL SPIRITUAL: Music can minister to your heart - Music can influence one to make spiritual decisions or influence the spirit world (The evil spirit departed from Saul)
