Why Bay of Pigs Failed and Effects 1. CIA claimed Cuban air force was knock out 2. A small group of soldiers was to distract Castro’s force but never landed 3. When the main command unit arrived on coast, were met by 25, 000 Cuban troops armed with Soviet tanks and weapons 4. Men killed and imprisoned Impacts: Kennedy took blame for the failure US paid Castro $53 mil. in food and medical supplies to release prisoners Kennedy promised to resist further communism in the W. End of the Crisis Kennedy called up 100,000 troops in FL and US Navy prevented any more USSR ships to go to Cuba For 6 days the world waited for the 2 nations to go to war with nukes Oct. 28, 1962 Khrushchev offered to remove missiles as long as US didn’t invade Cuba US secretly agreed to remove missiles from Turkey How do you think the American public felt about the gov’t after this? 7

Aug. 13, 1961, Ex. German troops began building the Berlin Wall It was a 10 ft wall of concrete with barbed wire fencing on top After both crisis 1963 JFK & Khrushchev establish a hotline (communication system between the US & USSR) However, the leaders did agree upon the Limited Test Ban Treaty which prohibited the testing of nukes in the atmosphere
