3  The Socio-Cultural Movement for Haitian Workers (MOSCTHA) is a nonprofit organization founded in Dominican Republic by a Haitian immigrants group.  Since 1985, MOSCTHA implement community development programs aimed to improve living standards and human rights respect for vulnerable populations, especially Haitian immigrants living in remote areas (bateyes, urban and sub urban places and in cross border communities DR-Haiti) of Dominican Republic.

5 1 The term “batey” traditionally refers to a community of Haitian migrant workers found in sugar cane plantations in the DR, where poverty is highly concentrated and a significant portion of the residents are of Haitian origin or descendence. There are 405 bateyes with an estimated total population of 315,215. Bateyes are characterized by marginalization, poor education, difficult access, machismo and promiscuity. 7  This program facilitates formation and reflection for a healthy, responsible and pleasurable sexuality, raising levels of information and education to target population.  MOSCTHA has a Community Health Center and Mobile Units that provide integrated health services to limited economic people resources and difficult access areas.

9  This project develops educational activities to promote healthy changes in sexual behavior of target populations and increase STI/HIV preventive services contribute to: Increase consistent condom use with sexual partners Reduce risky behaviors among priority populations Improve the supply of condoms

11  MOSCTHA contribute to strengthen the fight against malaria in vulnerable populations in high incidence DR areas, through social communication strategy and community involvement aimed to malaria prevention and control for reduce it`s transmission using insecticide-treated mosquito net

12  Tuberculosis is a major public health problem. 2006 estimated incidence rate is 89 cases per 100,000 population, ranked among the highest in Latin America.  This program combines some strategies for IEC and community involvement to improve access to the DOT/TAES regime and detection cases that contribute to the TB prevalence reduction. 14  MOSCTHA recognizes that population welfare depends on their basic needs satisfaction (economic, social and environmental).  Community development programs, guide target populations on awareness of their community problems and encouraging community participation in social and local development to improve life quality.

16  This program aims to improve migrant documentation conditions and lack of knowledge, about human dignity respect as a way to reduce racism and xenophobia in communities and local authorities.

17  This program seeks to achieve economic independence through the formation of savings and credit groups specific for women and youth.

22 VOLUNTEER AND INTERNSHIP  All year MOSCTHA receive students from all nations universities, seeking to enrich their experiences serving as volunteers in health and education.
