A quick look at the Spanish American War Cuba wanted to gain independence from their mother nation, Spain. The Spanish send a Military Governor, Valeriano Weyler, to put down the rebellion. He becomes known as the “Butcher” due to the violence he ensnared. American Public compares the Cuban Revolution to the American Revolution.
13
Spanish American War (Continued) Spanish forces sink a U.S. Naval Ship, the U.S.S Maine, which leads to the U.S. declaring war on Spain. The War is fought in the Caribbean and in the Pacific Islands of Guam and the Philippians. After only 4 months, the U.S. and Spain sign the Treaty of Paris that declares the U.S. the winner and gives them Control of some of Spain’s assets.
14
Spanish American War (Continued) The Treaty of Paris had the following terms: 1.Cuba will be granted their Independence. 2.Spain gives up control of Puerto Rico and Guam. 3.Philippians bought for a $20 Million payment from the U.S. Officially ends the Spanish- American War and essentially sends the U.S. to “World Power” status, as Spain spirals to a lower power.
15
The Fate of Cuba The US promises not to annex Cuba. The US sets up a Military Government in Cuba for 3 years. – This angered many Cubans because it violated Cuban independence. – The US basically becomes Cuba’s new master...replacing Spain
16
A Change in Cuba’s Fate The US allowed Cuba to write a Constitution and remove all troops if… Cuba agreed to the Platt Amendment Provisions: Cuba’s government CANNOT enter any foreign agreements. Cuba must allow the US to est. a naval base there. – Guantanamo Bay The US has the right to intervene in any Cuban affairs whenever necessary

Results Cuba reluctantly signs the Platt Amendment The US only intervenes twice (until 1934 when the Platt Amendment expires.)
