P.S.E.D Well being and cultural diversity Look at Jack and the Beanstalk discuss characters being kind, stealing etc. Discuss strangers in fairy tales – should we trust them? Traditional Tales which go against gender stereotypes Tales from different countries looking at same/different Difference between lives in medieval times, rich and poor

Communication and Language Reading and retelling traditional tales, retelling stories in their own words Create re-enactments of stories, interviewing characters, hot seating Looking at beginning, middle and ends of stories ends of stories Retell a different ending – the Gingerbread man gets away…… Gingerbread man gets away…… Taking messages to castles Story telling – the jester, troubadours and minstrels

Literacy Story structure Story structure Writing about creatures such as goblins, elves, giants, trolls, leprechauns, witches, and wizards. Writing in full sentences, capital letters, full stops, finger spaces and letter formation Phonics – groups, Phase 3, blending – homework Reading – for pleasure – fluency – practise – using phonic knowledge Letters from crusades, parchment/scrolls Story plans – a problem and resolution

Mathematics Calculation – counting all, counting on, symbols, taking away, number sentences, number bonds. Looking at size measuring (beanstalk) from non-standard to metric. Discuss numbers in traditional tales, 7 dwarves, 3 pigs, 3 bears - making sets of - repeated addition Money, (gold coins), time, (day in a castle) and 3D shapes, (building of castles)

Understanding the World Growth and plant care – grow own beanstalk Testing strength of materials – the 3 pig’s houses Maps – journeys Red Riding Hood Use the internet and books to find images of castles Use a paint program to design a castle How have castles changed? Look at different castles. People who used to live in castles. What life was like? Feasting Comparing dragons in tales to Chinese dragons

Expressive Arts and Design Modelling using reclaimed materials Colour changing, wax resistance, weaving Design own castle and shield for a knight, making a sweetie house (Hansel and Gretel) Creating scaly dragons, salt/tea leaves and lemon Medieval music Soldiers – keeping a good beat on drums Making ‘abracadabra’ wand music Dance - Into the castle, greensleeves - medieval dancing
