ORIENT/ORIENTplus - Connecting Academic Networks in China and Europe Jennifer(Jie) An CERNET Center/Tsinghua University 14 Feb.2012

Connecting Academic Networks in China and Europe  ORIENT project provides for the first time a direct Internet connection dedicated solely to the research and education community of Europe and China (2.5Gbps, 2007~2010).

Connecting Academic Networks in China and Europe  ORIENTplus is daughter project of ORIENT. Due to new tender result, the PoP in Europe has been moved from Copenhagen to London in Jan.2012.

Connecting Academic Networks in China and Europe

Average Utilization

Maximum Utilization

Total Traffic (TByte)

Link Usage Over 25 substantial scientific and educational collaborative projects and programmes are using the ORIENT/ORIENTplus route:  CERN Collaboration: LHC project (IHEP- IN2P3), South East University with CERN  Shanghai Astronomical Observatory – JIVE  INFN-ARGO YBJ  EMBnet  EUChinaGrid  GEONETCast- EUMETSAT  1000 Genomes Project

Link Usage  INWA-GRID  CEOP-AEGIS and DRAGON2  Shanghai Jiao Tong University – University of Essex  Bridge-Grid  ITER - the global fusion energy programme  Global atmospheric research, remote robotic experiments, etc.

CERN Collaborations  Various HEP applications involving the IHEP and South East University Nanjing in research with CERN and other European sites at data speeds of up to 1 Gbps  LHC collaboration: It is notable that IHEP has been seen to have collaborations not only with IN2P3 but also with INFN (Italy), DKFZ (Germany)

IHEP-LHC  The graph below (courtesy of RENATER) shows the between IHEP and IN2P3. This single collaboration can be seen to have a background of 100-300Mbps and peaks of 400-500Mbps.

ShAO – eVLBI  VLBI - Very Long Baseline Interferometry is a technique that involves the collection of simultaneous observations from multiple radio telescopes. Data is then correlated to form very sharp, high-definition images.  Today this data is transported across the world using research and education networks.  The EXPReS project was a European Commission co-funded initiative, committed to creating a production eVLBI service both across Europe, but also beyond. And JIVE project is allowing ShAO to form part of its single giant virtual radio telescope eVLBI programme at data speeds of up to 512 Mbps

Earthquake Rescue Sichuan Earthquake in May, 2008 Satellite images of disaster region transferred from JRC (Italy) to RSGS (China) The images are used to identify the extent of the earthquake’s impact and to aid post-disaster reconstruction.

Key Objectives of ORIENTplus  to upgrade the EU–China link capacity as soon as achievable. Options include 2 x 2.5 Gbps, preferably on diverse routes, or 1 x 10 Gbps.  to ensure that the ORIENTplus connectivity is used to greatest effect by the EU and Chinese user communities

Other Potential Collaborations  NGI testbed  Research on Internet measurement, management and governance  IPv6 applications

Acknowledgement  John Chevers, Project coordinator, DANTE  David West, Project coordinator, DANTE  Zhonghui Li, CNGI-6IX NOC

Thanks!
