1. Passport It must stay valid (for at least 6 months into the future) Make copies of all important pages! 2. Visa Stamp Allows you to enter the U.S. The only document that can expire 3. Form I-94 (Arrival/Departure Record) Indicates your visa status in the U.S. and length of stay permitted Carry a copy with you (both sides) 4. Form DS-2019, I-797, I-20, other States your purpose in the U.S. Personal information must be correct

Change of Address Must be reported to the ISO to be input into SEVIS within 10 days of the change. Must be reported to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) on Form AR-11 or Form AR-11SR within 10 days of the change. Forms are available at the ISO and through the ISO website (http://web.mit.edu/scholars).

2-Year Home Residence Requirement [212(e)] If you are subject, then you must be physically present in your home country for at least 2 years before you can come back as H-1B, L-1, or U.S. Permanent Resident. Who is subject? direct government funding “skills list”

12-Month Bar If you have been in J status for more than 6 months during the past 12 months, then you must wait at least 12 months before starting a new J program in either the Research Scholar or Professor category. Taxes Tax year = January 1 – December 31 Tax Forms are available at http://www.irs.gov and in the ISO. You must have a Social Security Number to file a tax return (dependents must have SS# or ITIN). If you are paid in the U.S., tax returns must be filed by April 15 of the following year. If you are not paid in the U.S. you are not taxed in the U.S., but Form 8843 must be filed by June 15 of the following year.
