At home you computer is connected to your printer and scanner. This works well. A computer which is not connected to the network, is know as a ‘stand-alone’ computer. In a school or office, it would cost to much money for every computer to have a individual printer, so all the computers would be connected to the same printer. If you join a computer to a network, they are able to share the printer. This means that they can bye more expensive printers. A network is a electronically devises that you can share data, hardware and data.
5
Local area Network (LAN) Wide area network (WAN) The internet Intranet Extranet VPN (virtual private network)
6
A network that is shared in the same area. It doesn’t cover a wide range. It only covers a small part. Within a workspace, you can have different types of LAN. That allows us to access information from the network server.
7
Stand alone is a computer is a computer that can not connect with any other With workstations you can connect with a network, that is connected with many other computer.
8
Usually a networked computer will allow you to send messages to a friend who is working on another computer. You will probably see messages telling you that you are entering a networked system when you logon. Sometimes you have a choice between, many different computers.
9
This is a powerful computer that runs the network operating system and allows resources to be shared over the network by other devises and computers (called clients) connecting to it. These devises could include printers, disk drivers, CD-ROM drivers, modems. Cameras, fax etc. A file server must be kept in a cold room, dust free and the room has to be sacure.
10
Coordinates printing on the network
11
Software and data files can be shared Users can work together on a single shared document Users can communicate; for example, using instant messaging or email Users can stream media, so that they can view video and play audio on any computer or other devise attatched to the network
12
Users can access the network from any other workstation or devise Cheaper to buy one copy of software application and a pay a license fee for several computers that to buy individual licenses. Users can share hardware devises. Users can share internet connection
13
Client-/ server networks Peer-to-peer networks
14
One or more computers are designated as the server Client computers are those available tou you to use.
15
Allows every computer to communicate directly with every other computer in the network. A user can access data from any computer on the network This type of LAN is limited to about 10 machines, after which the peformance drops and the system becomes low.
16
All computers and other peripheral devices on the network are attached to cables that transmit data between them. A network cable is required. Uses a wireless link to connect to the network. Has three sets of components.
17
Bluetooth and WiFi are different standards for wireless communication. Bluetooth technology is useful when transferring information between two or more devices that are near each other when speed is not an issue, such as telephones, printers, modems and headsets. It is best suited to low-bandwidth applications like transfering sound data with telephones (i.e. with a Bluetooth headset) or byte data with hand-held computers (transferring files) or keyboard and mice. Wi-Fi is better suited for operating full-scale networks because it enables a faster connection, better range from the base station, and better security (if configured properly) than Bluetooth.
18
Bluetooth Wifi Range: 10 meters 100 meters Primary Devices: Mobile phones, mouse, keyboards, office and industrial automation devices Notebook computers, desktop computers, servers Ease of Use: Fairly simple to use. Can be used to connect upto seven devices at a time. It is easy to switch between devices or find and connect to any device. It is more complex and requires configuration of hardware and software. Specifications authority: Bluetooth SIG IEEE, WECA Year of development: 1994 1991 Bandwidth: Low ( 800 Kbps ) High (11 Mbps ) Hardware requirement: Bluetooth adaptor on all the devices connecting with each other Wireless adaptors on all the devices of the network, a wireless router and/or wireless access points Cost: Low High Power Consumption: Low High Frequency: 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz
