BIO OF POE On January 19,1809 a boy that was named Edgar Poe was born from the family of David and Elizabeth Poe. Since David and Elizabeth got separated she took them with her but when she died in 1811 he had been separated from his brother and sister (henry and Rosalie). Since he had been separated from them John Allan and his wife Mrs. Allan had adopted him and since Mr. Allan was a wealthy merchant so Edgar grew up around good surroundings and good schools. When Edgar grew up and entered the university of Virginia in 1826 at the age of 17 and this was around the time when Edgar had started drinking and was shunned by John Allan. Then since Edgar didn’t have a job skills, money and had been shunned by his adoptive father he went into the U.S. Army in 1827 were he was the made

BIO CONTINUE sergeant major ranked. During that time Mrs. Allan had died of the disease called Tuberculosis. In 1829 which was also the time John Allan had actually tried being nice to Poe by signing his application to West Point. But even while waiting to enter West Point he lived with his grandma but couldn't stay long for Mr. Allan didn’t send him any money in 1831. When Edgar made it as an editor in 1835 with the story “The Manuscript Found in a Bottle” which was around the time when he married his 13 year old cousin. But in 1847 Virginia had died 10 days after Edgar's birth day causing him to be distressed, Edgar Allan Poe died on Oct-3-1849.

MY THEORY. I believe that the alcohol theory is the most likely because in the last paragraph it had said for his bio that he had taken the wrong train. He was supposed to go to new York but instead he had gone to Baltimore around the time of voting. Usually when you’re drunk you make a mistake like that or unless you have a hangover so doesn’t that make a little sense. Along with that he had been distressed from the loss of his wife Virginia who died 10 days after his birthday from tuberculosis. So maybe the friend he was hanging out with that night took him out drinking to cheer him up a little.

THE RAVEN I believe that in this poem it does use symbolism in it because the raven does say nevermore. I also like this poem because when in the beginning he does also use suspense when he hears a noise outside his chamber door or window. When he opens the window though the raven flies in it goes straight to the board above his chamber door and stands perfectly still while saying nevermore. But now he also starts to ask the bird questions about Lenore his lost love. Also around the time when he had written this his wife Virginia was dying who he loved dearly. And since the bird symbolizes something wouldn’t it make sense if the raven is actually meant to be his feelings for the one he is now losing. Along with that

THE RAVEN CONT. the symbolism in this story is where feelings are being brought out as the suspense increases throughout the poem. Also if you notice while reading he also uses his 5 senses like sight hearing and even feelings. By using those senses he creates a vivid image of what's going on especially with the raven for it speaks to him but it also could be a dream cause he is remembering the pain of loss. Its also possible that he feels he needs to bring out what he feels and he creates it so he can remember what he felt so if forgets he’ll remember that feeling to.

CONCLUSION I believe that Edgar Allan Poe is like the modern day father of horror story’s because he is an excellent writer all together for the simple fact its suspenseful. I’m guessing he love horror stories for that fact its suspenseful and creepy like I do cause you basically have to like something to actually do and not give up on it. Plus in his story the raven I loved how he used suspense to create the poem along with details and the 5 senses he used (sight, hearing, feel). I Also Love How In the “Masque of the Red Death” he uses a kind of color symbolism to show the life cycle of a human and of the seasons, so yes I love his stories that we have read so far.
