5
Draw a diagram pg 12 When to use these stategies You can draw a diagram to show a problem visually. For problems that seem to have an overwhelming number of steps you can solve a simpler problem that is similar.
6
Draw a diagram pg 12 A worm is trying to escape from a well 10 ft deep. The worm climbs 2 ft per day, but each night it slides back 1 ft. How many days will the worm take to climb out of the well. Read and understand The total distance to travel is 10ft.. The worm climbs 2 ft per day, but loses 1 ft each night. The goal how many days will it take him to get out of the hole
7
Draw a diagram pg 12 Plan and solve Draw a diagram
8
Solve a simpler problem pg 12 Instead of solving the problem got a 10ft well, change the problem to a simpler one based on a 3ft well, and then on a 4ft well. The worm will take 2 days to climb out of a 3ft well And 3 days to climb out of a 4ft well. Time3ft well Distance from bottom 4 ft well distance from bottom End of day 1 End of night 1 End of day 2 End of night 2 End of day 3 up 2 ft up 1 ft Up 3 ft Up 2 ft Up 1 ft Up 3 ft Up 2 ft Up 4 ft
9
Simpler problems pg 12 Look back You might have though that the worm progresses 1 ft each day and therefore needs 10 days to escape. The worm does move a total of 1 ft each day, except on the 9 th day. On the 9 th day it travels 2 ft and reaches the edge of the wall.
10
Check for understanding pg 11 Under your warm up answer the following questions. 1.Look back at the two methods used to solve the example. Which method would you use and why? 2.Suppose the worm works hard during the day and is able to climb 3ft per day. Then it slides 2ft per night. How many days will it take for the worm to climb out of the 10ft well.
11
Check for understanding answers 1. your opinion 2. Time 3 ft well 4 ft well End of day 1 End of night 1 End of day 2 Up 3 ft up 1 ft Up 4 ft The pattern is 1 ft each Day after the initial 3 ft the First day. So it takes the Worm 8 days to get out of The well.
