- Hernandez de Cordoba founded the first Spanish permanent settlements in the region -Nicaragua gained independence from Spain in 1821 -briefly becoming a part of the Mexican Empire -and then a member of a federation of independent Central American provinces. -In 1838, Nicaragua became an independent republic.

Lago de Nicaragua (Cocibolca) The aboriginal name for this lake, Cocibolca, means "sweet sea". It is the largest lake in Central America and one of the very few, or perhaps the only, freshwater lake to have sharks, although their numbers have dropped precipitously. Bull Shark

Bluefields This town was named after the Dutch pirate Blewfeldt, who made his base here in the 1700s. Most locals also speak English. The easiest way to reach the town is by airplane or boat.

Granada Granada was founded in 1524 by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba. It is well known for its well-preserved colonial buildings including the town square, plazas, hotels, museums, and churches. Today, the city's foreign population has grown as Granada has Become a popular residence of many North Americans and Erupeans
