3 Building Schools for the Future b “ School buildings should inspire learning. They should nurture every pupil and member of staff. They should be a source of pride and a practical resource for the community” b “State of the art school buildings can improve educational standards and have a positive effect on everyone who uses them - pupils, teachers or the wider community.”

4 Where does the money come from? b Successful targeted bid to central government for £3.9M b 80% from Government BSF allocation b 20% from the Council in order to draw down the 80%.

5 Why did we Bid? b Capacity of 333 to accommodate 420 pupils b Particular problems in Year 6 and Reception identified by Ofsted b HORSA Huts close to end of life and other building condition problems b Small class sizes (41m2 not 56m2) b Insufficient hall space b Difficulties in adapting to the requirements of the modern curriculum b This is a successful school!

7 The bidding process b First review of provision acknowledged difficulties but little hope of solution b Options Appraisal in 2002 b Finalised February 2003 b Bid submitted October 2003 b Reconsidered by BSF team in Autumn 2004 b Successful bid announced December 2004

8 Makeshift Strategy for 2004/05 b 1st bid unsuccessful b More Ofsted criticism b Mobile reception proposal to alleviate short term difficulties to be funded by the Council b This strategy no longer required following bid success

10 Clarifying Design Brief b Negotiations with other providers b Negotiations with DfES b Visits to other schools b Consultation meetings when appropriate b To clarify issues of nursery, wrap around care, SEN provision et al.

11 Few firm decisions yet.. b We will build a 2FE school for the future on this site b We have almost £4M allocated to help us do this b We will conduct the process in an open transparent and consultative way

12 Initial Thinking (open to change) b One large integrated new building is best b Minimise expenditure on temporary building in order to spend most on the permanent new buildings b Try to minimise disruption to existing school during building b Site Options

15 Formal Design (after Easter) b All required consultations - Highways, planning permission etc b Partnership with Governing Body b Seek to involve pupils via school b Seek to involve parents and community via termly meetings like this

16 On Site b Health & Safety of children paramount b Too early to answer detailed questions but will do so at termly consultation meetings and via communications from school
