Problem There are 11 slave states and 11 free states – In the Senate, there is balance between them (22 Senators from each side) – In the House of Representatives, there are 100 Northern representatives and 76 Southern representatives. Missouri wants to enter the Union as a slave state. But, this will upset the balance between the two sides. What should we do?

4. Missouri Compromise 1.Missouri is allowed to enter the Union as a slave state. 2.Maine is created and allowed to enter the Union as a free state. – This maintains balance between free and slave states. 3.Slavery will not be allowed in any new territories/states created north of the 36 º30’ line (southern tip of Missouri)

5. The Election of 1824 Andrew Jackson – 99 Electoral Votes John Quincy Adams – 84 Electoral Votes Henry Clay – 37 Electoral Votes William Crawford – 41 Electoral Votes – Who wins?

6. No one. The Constitution says that a candidate needs a majority of Electoral Votes. That would have been 131. Jackson only had 99. Now, the House of Representatives got to choose the winner between the top 3 candidates: Jackson, Adams, and Crawford Now out, Clay, who was in the House of Representatives, promised his support to Adams in exchange for the Secretary of State position. And with those votes in the House, John Quincy Adams was the new president. Jackson was not happy. He called it a “corrupt bargain”, meaning that they had made an illegal agreement.
